Strive, Survive, Thrive Key Speakers on You Tube

I wanted to say a belated huge thank you to all those who joined us at the WAP conference Strive, Survive, Thrive last month. The feedback we got from those who were there was really positive.

As we're aware you're a busy lot and Wiltshire's a big County so we had the key speakers filmed so you could enjoy them at your leisure.

Visit WAP's You Tube channel to hear about how arts is regarded in Winchester, (Simon Eden CEO Winchester City Council), The latest from Arts Council South West (Paul Goddard), how Kandu Arts For Sustainable Development sustains itself (Ed Deedigan), how to sell your work (Erica Steer, Devon Guild Of Crafts) and more.

So why not grab a cuppa and watch and be inspired.

In order that we can be confident that we are representative of our members we would welcome individual artists/ practitioners or directors of smaller arts organisations  to join our steering group.

You would be joining at a particularly interesting time as we are currently looking at what WAP needs to focus on in the months following this funding period which ends in April.

The group meets 4 times per year (with some additional meeting/ action groups where needed) throughout the County.

If you would like more information about what it means to be on the steering group please do email me or leave a message on the blog and I'll get in touch.

What do you think about WAP?

We are currently carrying out some evaluation on WAP's work. The brilliant Chrissie Godfrey is doing this for us. She may contact some of you as 'stakeholders' of WAP but if she doesn't please do leave any thoughts and comments here about what sort of impact WAP has had on  the arts in the County, how it has helped, not helped you and what you think the priorities might usefully be for WAP to focus on in the future.

Thanks all.

Tracy

If any of you who cam want to comment on the day on this blog please do.

Thanks again.

Demonstrating Outcomes workshop

I've been on this one and thought it was really good!

'Demonstrating Outcomes' – a one-day workshop
4th October 2012 in London

Download brochure
Book places
We are pleased to announce the launch of an additional session of the popular 'Demonstrating Outcomes' workshop.

'Demonstrating Outcomes', is an intensive, one-day workshop designed to help you demonstrate to funders and other key decision makers the real worth of the services which you provide and your impact on the quality of life of your beneficiaries – a key concern since outcome measurement is now so high on the new Government's agenda. It is particularly effective at helping you to measure 'soft outcomes' – those changes in individual capacity and quality of life to which a crude, quantitative 'numbers count' will never do justice.

It is limited to 20 participants and helps you apply a range of participatory evaluation tools which can show just how far your clients, volunteers and beneficiaries have come since being involved with your project. It will provide:
  • an understanding of how to measure outcomes
  • tools to measure 'softer' qualitative outcomes
  • opportunity to test these tools
  • pointers on how to use evaluation to maximise your fundraising

The course is run by Dawn Wood of Action Planning Consulting, who has extensive experience in this area.

Here is some feedback from those who have recently attended 'Demonstrating Outcomes':

"Some great tips and tools to take away. A very engaging trainer." Sarah Bone, Chief Executive, Diabetes Research and Wellness Foundation.
"A very enjoyable course. Lots of practical and relevant information." Marie Kearns, Chief Executive, Harmony House Dagenham
"Brilliant day and resources." Kit Lendon, Volunteering Development Manager, PDSA "Excellent course. One of the best I have attended." Linda Bonfield, Adult Team Manager, Solihull Carers Centre

Book online and request invoice Book by email

Your participation fee of £185 includes VAT, all course resources and lunch. You can book by entering your details here and will have the choice of either requesting an invoice or paying online. Alternatively you can email anne@actionplanning.co.uk or phone the Events team on 020 8661 8060.

Understand your audience!

Peter Tyas head of Arts at Wiltshire Council has commissioned some really interesting work looking at audience data in the County and has organised a session where people can have this explained and begin to look at how they can use that information to develope their own work. Anyway this is what Peter says:

We all know that cultural organisations are hard pressed for time and resources, and so Wiltshire Council's Arts and Conservation and Museums Advisory Services is providing you with a quick win - data about likely audiences and visitors - as well as an opportunity to gain from working with others over the longer term to turn those numbers into visitors/customers. In a few weeks I will be able to share a report prepared by The Audience Agency with you; that report will summarise what we know about audiences for arts venues and museums in Wiltshire. Today I wanted to let you know a bit more about the project and the proposed date for discussing this data with the Audience Agency.
Understanding the local audience is an essential part of any organisation’s forward planning and strategic decision making. It is also becoming increasingly important for all museums and arts organisations to be able to provide robust statistical evidence as a part of fundraising and evaluation. Wiltshire Council has commissioned The Audience Agency to write a snapshot report that draws together the available data on Wiltshire’s population and the tendency for communities to engage in cultural activities. The report provides a broad overview of the county and then focuses down on three example urban areas: Trowbridge, Chippenham and Salisbury.
There will be a workshop on the 11th of October at 1:15pm in Trowbridge to discuss the report and how cultural organisations can use this knowledge of the local audience to increase footfall and deepen community engagement. There is also an opportunity for organisations to follow up this workshop with a longer session looking at how individual organisations can use this data as a part of their own marketing and audience development work and identifying opportunities for the sector to work together over the longer term.
Please can you let me know if you will be able to attend the workshop on the 11th of October and whether your organisation would be interested in getting involved in further discussions?

Are you delivering music education in Wiltshire?

You may be aware that work is being done to map the delivery of music throughout the County through the Music Hub. Please see the following detail from Keith Nimmo of Wiltshire Music Centre and contact me at wiltshireartspormoters@gmail.com or Keith directly on keith.nimmo@wiltshiremusic.org.uk  for further details and the survey so that your work can be factored into the plan.

Why is this survey important and why is the data needed now?
As you probably know, a key requirement in the Government’s National Plan for Music Education is that each area of the country should form a Music Education Hub.   Here in Wiltshire the Music Service has taken the lead – like most other parts of the country (no surprise as so much of the core work of the Plan is already delivered by Music Services).  As Head of the Music Service Valerie Hayward applied for Hub funding, has drawn up proposals for governance and is now drafting its business plan etc.

Nevertheless, as I’m sure you will readily appreciate, the whole point of setting up a Hub is to create a structure through which everyone with a practical commitment to delivering music education work of high quality can be efficiently networked to bring about comprehensive and coherent delivery of the plan.  A shared sense of ownership of the Hub’s plans, and clarity about how we can each play our part in shaping and delivering the Hub’s work, will be important giving us the best chance of the Wiltshire Hub achieving its full potential.  In an increasingly competitive funding climate, that in turn will be conducive to sustainability of our work.  It’s a collective enterprise!

As with every other part of the country, the Hub is due to become active from September 2012.   Carrie Creamer of Wiltshire Youth Arts Partnership and myself for Wiltshire Music Centre Trust – both longstanding partners of Wiltshire Music Service – will serve on the Wiltshire Hub’s Strategic Reference Group, as will Helen Keal of Salisbury International Arts Festival representing Wiltshire Arts Promoters.   We will work together to help cultivate this ethos, encouraging all concerned to regard the Hub as a collective venture and to collaborate from the outset to help shape and deliver its plan.  It’s an exciting challenge and a real opportunity to work together as partners for the future of music education in Wiltshire.

Arts Council National Portfolio Organisations already delivering music education work are well aware of their role in helping to deliver the National Plan for Music Education.  Much excellent music education work is of course also delivered by other arts organisations across Wiltshire.  We want to ensure all this work is appropriately reflected and celebrated in the Hub’s plan.   It is the bedrock on which the Hub’s work will be built and hence our request for your help in gathering this information now.  Valerie’s Briefing Paper to WAP re the Wiltshire Music Hub is available for anyone who wants to see it.

At a recent meeting of Wiltshire Arts Promoters (WAP) Steering Group I undertook to liaise with Jo Beal to coordinate this information gathering exercise with her research work for SWAG.  The intention is to minimise the work you have to do providing data.

Once again, many thanks for your help with this.

City Hall Sold Out Event

It's always a joy to celebrate sold out events, let us know about yours!

Well done City Hall.

Kevin Bridges
Monday 3 September, 8pm
Kicking off our Autumn season in style…

Kevin Bridges makes his first appearance at City Hall to a sold out auditorium. The Glaswegian comic has risen to fame in the past couple of years from appearing on Live At The Apollo, Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow and Would I Lie To You (where he tells the brilliant story about how he had accidentally bought a horse in Bulgaria – watch the YouTube clip, it is hilarious).

‘It’s his eye for detail that has elevated him to a MUST-SEE act’ The Daily Mirror

Kevin introduced his own BBC1 Series in 2010 called ‘What’s The Story’. In this series, Kevin looked to discover his background and explored the reality behind some of his on-stage material. This inspired his new tour ‘The Story Continues…’, which has nearly sold out on every date on the tour so far.

We look forward to welcoming Kevin to Salisbury.

NEW Digital R&D Fund for the Arts

Arts Council launch a £7 million Digital R&D Fund for the Arts in partnership with Nesta and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC).
The Digital R&D Fund for the Arts, which follows a pilot project in 2011, is unique in encouraging collaboration between the arts, digital technology providers and the research community in order to undertake experiments from which the wider arts and cultural sector can learn.

The launch of the Digital R&D Fund for the Arts coincides with the publication of our Creative media policy, which sets out how we aim to stimulate a new era of digital access and growth in the arts and creative industries.

The policy explains how we will work to support artists and arts and cultural organisations to develop skills in producing, distributing, connecting, preserving and exploiting their artistic and cultural work digitally.

It also identifies nine development areas that need to be addressed if we are going to see a significant growth in the quality, volume and reach of creative media content and experiences produced by arts and cultural organisations. Wiltshire Cultural Strategy Consultation

Please see the following sent by Arts Officer Meril Morgan.

DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO OCTOBER 14TH

Wiltshire Council is leading on the creation of a Cultural Strategy for the county. The purpose of the strategy is to enable every part of the cultural sector to work together to focus energy and resources upon a set of shared objectives that will transform the cultural offer and deliver real benefits for the communities of Wiltshire.

A consultation paper has been developed through a process of small group consultation led by Wiltshire Council Arts Service and through an Open Space event in November 2011 led by Creative Ecology Wiltshire. This consultation paper proposes a definition of culture as well as identifying the building blocks for a vision for culture in Wiltshire.

Read the consultation paper

Cultural strategy consultation – online submission form

If the above links don’t work then please visit http://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/council/consultations/developingaculturalstrategyforwiltshire.htm

The initial consultation has brought forward a set of five priorities and proposes that it is through the sector working collaboratively that these priorities will be delivered. The five priorities are:

Leadership and Flexibility
The Cultural Economy
Communication and Audience Development
Working Together and Raising Quality
Growing the Sector and Developing the Offer

This second phase of consultation is an opportunity to shape the vision for culture and to consider whether the priorities identified are the most important for the cultural sector in Wiltshire.

Please do take a little time to tell us what you think - deadline for responses is 30 September 2012

To find out more about the strategy or to join a mailing list for regular updates please contact: arts@wiltshire.gov.uk

Please do not hesitate to contact us or Peter Tyas, head of arts and archives should you require any further information and our apologies in advance for any cross posting or duplication.
